Alsace: Where France Meets Germany in a Picturesque Fusion
Nestled between the borders of France and Germany, Alsace weaves a tapestry of charm that transcends nationality. Its amalgamation of delectable cuisine, exquisite wines, and Europe’s most enchanting towns beckon travelers with open arms. A UNESCO-listed natural regional park, Alsace boasts preservation at its core, capturing the essence of nature’s beauty.
Our sojourn to Alsace unfolded in the summer of 2018, a season that locals recall as the second hottest on record in France. Despite scorching temperatures exceeding 35°C, we embraced the sun-drenched days with zest, marveling at the rare moments when the sun sought refuge behind a cloud’s embrace. While ideal photography conditions were occasionally elusive, we harnessed the radiance to create our own vibrant memories.
Thann: Our journey embarked from Mulhouse, with Thann as our inaugural destination. Stepping into this village felt akin to entering a breathtaking painting. Cobblestone streets wound through the serene countryside, and half-timbered houses adorned in bold hues beckoned. It was a scene plucked from a fairytale, with window blooms adding a final touch of whimsy.
Éguisheim: Among the villages, Éguisheim emerged as our favorite, capturing our hearts with its enchanting allure. This place, akin to a real-life Disney movie set, defied our attempts to encapsulate its beauty in photographs. Wandering its tranquil streets, flanked by vibrantly painted structures and the sweet strains of street musicians, was an experience to treasure. Though our desire was to stay indefinitely, even a few hours were sufficient to fall under its spell.
Colmar: The epicenter of Alsatian splendor, Colmar epitomized medieval charm and architectural preservation. Canals meandering through the town evoked Venice’s essence, with the iconic “La Petite Venise” a must-see. Ambling through covered markets and quaint shops was a delight, but a parting glance at the Statue of Liberty – a tribute to Colmar’s native son, Bartholdi, the sculptor of the famous statue – was the perfect farewell.
Obernai: Within the Alsace constellation, Obernai stands as a radiant star not to be missed. The town’s medieval core exudes timelessness, adorned by a chapel tower, historic homes, and inviting vineyard trails. Each house facade painted in harmonious hues, framed by cascading flowers and Renaissance wells, provided a canvas of captivating photo opportunities.
