Exploring the Enchanting Beauty of Lake Como: A Dream Realized
Whether it’s the allure of a celebrity wedding or the captivating Instagram snapshots shared by friends, Lake Como has woven its way into my consciousness. The desire to witness this mesmerizing destination firsthand, to immerse myself in its splendor instead of merely hearing about it, had taken root within me. And serendipitously, during our 2018 sojourn in Switzerland, fate granted us an extra day – an opportunity I seized to fulfill my dream of experiencing Lake Como.
Under the brilliant August sun, we embarked on a day trip from Lucerne, commencing our journey with fervor. After an uninterrupted three-hour drive, we arrived at Como. Yet, Como was but a stepping stone, and without hesitation, we charted a course for Bellagio.
Opting for the lakeside route – a choice that hardly raises eyebrows – we embarked on a delightful, albeit slightly bumpy, journey. The narrow road catered to both incoming and outgoing traffic, treating us to unparalleled vistas of the lake.
Our voyage from Como saw us pause at several small villages along the way. Nesso, a charming hamlet nestled halfway between Como and Bellagio, enticed us to wander its slopes and streets. Bathed in lakeside sunshine, Nesso served as a welcome respite from our extended drive.
As I delved into the history of Nesso, I discovered the eloquent words of Leonardo da Vinci in his Codex Atlanticus: “Two miles higher up there is Nesso, a place where a river falls with great violence into a vast rift in the mountain. These trips are to be made in the month of May.” Standing on the precipice, gazing at the gorge, one could only wonder if we stood on the very spot where da Vinci once stood. While the waterfall itself was akin to others, the picturesque surroundings rendered it a spectacle to behold.
Bellagio, a jewel in the crown of Lake Como, beckoned with its quaint walkways, waterfront cafes, and pastel-hued fishermen’s abodes. This dreamy town epitomized dolce far niente, capturing our hearts with each cobblestone alleyway and café-lined vista. Arriving by ferry proved the most convenient method, dropping us amidst the hustle and bustle of Bellagio’s vibrant streets.
As we ambled through its labyrinthine lanes, we captured its enchanting beauty through our lenses. The colorful buildings, hidden alleyways, and bustling streets made for a captivating canvas. Our hours in Bellagio were fleeting, as daylight waned and the inevitable return to Lucerne beckoned.
We wandered the streets and alleys of this charming town over a course of several hours, each time with an eye to capture its postcard perfect beauty in our camera. Colorful buildings secret alleyways leading to another street with any shops and so much to explore in just 1 day.
However, we couldn’t resist the temptation to embark on a 5-minute walk to the northern tip of the lake’s dividing triangle. The serene locale offered an expansive view of the lake and its encircling mountains, away from the tourist throngs.
Our journey back to the car park took an alternate route, allowing us to relish a mostly uphill walk and a breathtaking sunset over the tranquil waters. This impromptu escapade exceeded our expectations, leaving us vowing to return for a more leisurely and extended stay.
Key Tips:
- Carry euros if arriving from Switzerland.

Lake Como proved to be a realm of unanticipated wonder. From vibrant towns to serene landscapes, each moment etched itself into our memories, echoing the sentiment that experiences, indeed, surpass tales.
