Embarking on Alpine Adventures: Hiking Mount First in Switzerland

“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” – John Muir

This quote encapsulates the spirit of our memorable dirt hike during our Switzerland trip in the summer of 2018. What initially seemed like an optional excursion turned into a captivating experience that defined our journey. Mount First, a cherished peak in the Bernese Oberland region, offered us an unforgettable day of exploration and enchantment.

Accessible from Grindelwald through a cable car ride, Mount First is renowned for adventure sports. As we ascended in the cable car, the breathtaking panorama unfolded before us—lush green slopes transitioning into a snowy wonderland, surrounded by majestic peaks. The cable car ride alone was an unparalleled experience, offering views that European counterparts couldn’t match.

Mount First stands opposite the North face of the Eiger, providing a unique vantage point. A clear, sunny day is ideal for optimal vistas, and we were fortunate to experience one in August. At an elevation of 7113 feet, the summit unveiled an awe-inspiring spectacle. The mountain chain, spanning from Faulhorn to Schreckhorn, was visible, with Jungfrau, Eiger, and Wetterhorn standing prominently.

Various well-marked trails invited exploration. Our chosen path led to Bachalpsee, a lake with an intriguing name—German for “lake,” ironically suggesting that no other lake was needed after it. Our journey began with a hike through the scenic route, capturing countless photographs of the mesmerizing landscape.

The trail to Bachalpsee took around an hour, enriched by challenging inclines and breathtaking views. Wildflowers, alpine meadows, and grazing cows added to the charm. The tranquil symphony of cowbells ringing provided a serenading backdrop. Upon reaching Bachalpsee, we reveled in its stunning beauty. The crystal-clear blue water mirrored the snow-capped peaks, creating an ethereal tableau. Our tranquil moment was complemented by warm tea and snacks, a truly serene experience.

Various options lay beyond the lake. One was the ascent to Faulhorn, Europe’s highest-altitude hotel. However, we decided against it due to elevation gain, time constraints, and weather considerations. Upon our descent, the cliff walk awaited, a metal structure attached to the mountain face. An exhilarating experience, this walk featured transparent glass, offering breathtaking views of the Alps’ skyline, including the iconic Eiger north wall.

As the day drew to a close, we descended the mountain via cable car. There were alternative options—Eagle-shaped zip lines, go-karts, and Trotti bikes—each offering a unique way down. In winter, skiing is a popular choice. We opted for the cable car, enjoying the ride down while appreciating the Alpine panorama.

A few pointers for fellow adventurers:

  • Confirm the last cable car departure time from Grindelwald
  • Plan it as a day trip, pack water and snacks, and be weather-prepared
  • If hiking with children, pack essentials, as amenities are limited
  • Dress warmly, with waterproof boots and a jacket
  • Consider carrying a tripod for still water captures
  • A Swiss Half Fare Card enhances convenience
