Exploring the Charms of Akaroa: A Lighthouse Lover’s Delight

My affinity for lighthouses knows no bounds; there’s something undeniably romantic about these beacons of light. Regardless of our travel destination, we always seem to sniff them out like eager greyhounds, making it a point to visit at least 2-3 of these maritime marvels on every trip.

Our journey began in Christchurch, embarking on a picturesque drive that offered breathtaking vistas throughout. The entire route was adorned with lush greenery and flocks of sheep, a truly beautiful sight to behold.

The name “Akaroa” itself signifies “long harbor,” reflecting its historical significance as a major harbor in the Canterbury region during the 18th century. Nestled on a pleasant hillside location with the bay before it and towering mountains behind, Akaroa boasts a rich French heritage. Much of its development can be attributed to the pioneering efforts of the Marists from France.

Our first stop was the Catholic St. Patrick’s Akaroa, a charming little green church nestled on a foothill. We stumbled upon this gem during our leisurely stroll through the village. While we didn’t venture inside, the views it offered over the bay were simply stunning. The well-maintained lawn and adjacent rose garden added to its allure. This 1840s mission church, rebuilt 40 years later, exudes a cozy local charm that’s hard to resist.

Moving on, we discovered the Akaroa lighthouse, a beautiful wooden structure that had been relocated to its current spot around three decades ago and is now lovingly maintained by volunteers. This lighthouse can be conveniently included in a delightful walk offering captivating harbor views. Located just a stone’s throw away from St. Patrick’s, it was a brief but rewarding stroll. Unfortunately, the lighthouse was closed during our visit, but the breathtaking views of the harbor and the town more than made up for it.

For those planning to visit Akaroa, here are some useful tips:

  1. The road can be a bit slow and winding, especially in rainy conditions, so exercise caution while driving.
  2. Weekends tend to get busy in terms of parking, so try to secure a spot on the outskirts and explore on foot.
  3. The entire village is easily navigable on foot.
  4. If you wish to visit the lighthouse, keep in mind that it’s open only on Sundays for three hours, with an entry fee of $2 per person.
