Exploring the Enchanting Cotswolds: A Photographer's Paradise

Have you ever dreamt of a place straight out of a fairy tale? Think honey-colored cottages, quaint stone footbridges, narrow winding streets, and a tranquil river meandering through. The Cotswolds is that dream come true.

Our first glimpse of the Cotswolds left us utterly spellbound. The charming cottages, some seemingly centuries old, have gracefully withstood the test of time, preserving their beauty for generations to admire.

You can traverse an entire village within minutes. The streets are lined with meticulously manicured gardens, vibrant flowers, and picturesque hanging baskets. Gift shops, cozy tea houses, and Victorian-style markets beckon exploration at every turn. Though we had only a day, there was so much to discover.

Here are seven of the prettiest towns that we had the pleasure of visiting in the Cotswolds:

Castle combe – This picturesque village has served as the backdrop for numerous movies, including the 1967 classic ‘Dr. Dolittle.’ It boasts a charming church dating back to the 15th century and England’s oldest tower clock. Walking through Castle Combe is like stepping back in time, with no modern distractions, just quiet, picturesque streets alongside a meandering river.

Bibury – From a photographer’s perspective, Bibury was our favorite. It features two main streets—one running parallel to the river with a quaint footbridge and the other known as “Arlington Row,” showcasing a row of small cottages. These cottages are renowned as one of the most photographed buildings in the UK and certainly received their share of our admiration.

Burford – Though more of a medieval market town than a village, Burford has its own unique charm. The main street is bustling with markets and offers a convenient stop for a restroom break or tea and coffee. Craft and gift shops also abound.

Lower slaughter – Tucked near Bourton-on-the-Water, this quiet village often goes unnoticed amidst the bustling tourist crowds. Strolling through Lower Slaughter felt like wandering through the Venice of the Cotswolds, with charming streets paralleled by small canals. The village also boasts a picturesque old mill, which is now a museum and a great spot for photography.

Burton-on-the-water – This beautiful village sits alongside a meandering river, featuring arch-like footbridges and graceful white swans. It’s perfect for leisurely strolls and snapping selfies against the charming bridges.

Chipping Camden – Similar to Burford in size, Chipping Camden boasts one of the prettiest and finest high streets in the UK. Finding parking along the high street can be challenging, but once you do, you’re in for a treat. The market offers high-quality craft, antique, and jewelry shops. Be sure to visit the historic Market Hall.

Broadway – Our visit to Broadway was brief as night began to fall, but we couldn’t resist stopping at Broadway Tower. This striking tower, with its rich history, offers fantastic panoramic views from the top.

By now, you’ve probably gathered that our Cotswolds adventure was primarily focused on photography—photography, and more photography! It’s not the destination for a city-centric holiday; instead, it’s an invitation to experience the quintessential English countryside and savor some peaceful, laid-back moments.
